New biological nano-cellulose composite
Scientists of Swiss EMPA (Materials Science & Technology) found a new way to manufacture a new nano-cellulose powder destined to use in polymer composites with applications in the automotive industry (lightweight construction elements) and in products such as membranes or filters for bio-medical purposes.
Cellulose is a nearly endless biopolymer consisting of long glucose chains and of unique structural characteristics. It serves in cells of plants as a kind of scaffolding support or skeleton. Cellulose is extremely resistant against draught and can be chemically modified in many different ways leading to a change of its characteristics. It is bio-degradable.
