UNGA77: EU delegation kicks off meetings in New York

The EU kicks off a week of high-level meetings and events during the UN General Assembly in New York. Yesterday, High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell met with the UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the newly appointed UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk. On Sept. 19, 2022, Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen will represent the EU at the Transforming Education Summit, convened by the UN Secretary-General.

Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans will deliver a keynote speech at the World Economic Forum discussion on ‘Accelerating Climate Action through philanthropy-private-public collaboration’, and will participate in discussions on ‘Reaching Net Zero’ and climate resilience at the Clinton Global Initiative.

High Representative/Vice-President Borrell will speak, together with the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, and the Foreign Minister of Guatemala, Mario Bucaro, at the panel discussion ‘From Ukraine to the Americas: fortifying recovery against global shocks’, organised by the Atlantic Council.

The discussion will focus on the consequences of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and Russia’s disinformation campaigns in Latin America and the Caribbean. His speech will be transmitted live on EbS and on the EEAS twitter account (12:00 EST). In the afternoon, High Representative Borrell will chair an informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers which will centre on the global consequences of Russia’s aggression. He will hold a press conference following the meeting (18:00 EST), which will be transmitted live on EbS. Commissioner Janez Lenarčič will deliver a video message at the high-level side event ‘The Role of Humanitarian Diplomacy in Anticipating and Preventing Food Crises’.
