I was at a dinner party earlier this week. When our host asked what I did for a living, I answered, “I run a consulting practice focused on Web3 strategy and solutions,” to which she responded, “Web3 is B.S. You don’t even know what Web3 is.”
For reasons you can easily imagine, this unprovoked personal attack silenced the table. I smiled politely and said, “No one knows what Web3 is. It is technically undefined. But I’d welcome the opportunity to walk you through the group of technologies we believe are the building blocks of Web3 and several dozen projects
we’ve done – and are doing – for major sports leagues and Fortune 500 companies that demonstrate the power and promise of – the as yet undefined – Web3.”
She was clearly shocked by my answer and walked her POV back a bit by dismissively replying, “Well, that’s what I said. It’s undefined.”
Our host was a highly educated, extremely successful business person with a stellar reputation. Unfortunately, she had chosen to be willfully ignorant about all things Web3. The next few moments were filled with her spewing conflated soundbites and headlines and unrelated crypto market statistics to try to prove that she knew more about Web3 than anyone at the table… except she didn’t. Regrettably, she will never know how old and out of touch her nonsensical word salad made her sound.
I’m sharing this story because no one needs to be uneducated about Web3. There is a wealth of free information available online, including one of the best places to begin your Web3 journey: Metacademy, our free educational platform that teaches practical applications of blockchain, crypto, NFTs, Web3, the metaverse, and more. Get Web3 certified at metacademy.com.
BTW, after you get your Web3 certification, you may decide that Web3 is B.S. While I don’t believe that’s the conclusion you will draw, if you do, at least it will have come from a well-informed, intellectually honest place.
