Child rights: Preventing and combatting child sexual abuse online and a European strategy for a Better Internet for Kids

On May 11, 2022, the EU Commission is presenting a package on child rights, including a proposal for rules to prevent and combat child sexual abuse, and the European strategy for a Better Internet for Kids (BIK+).

The Commission is proposing new EU legislation to prevent and combat child sexual abuse online. With 85 million pictures and videos depicting child sexual abuse reported worldwide in 2021 alone, and many more going unreported, child sexual abuse is pervasive. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the issue.

Today, the Commission has also adopted a new European strategy for a Better Internet for Kids (BIK+), to improve age-appropriate digital services and to ensure that every child is protected, empowered and respected online.

The new European strategy for a Better Internet for Kids aims for accessible, age-appropriate and informative online content and services that are in children’s best interests.
