EU President von der Leyen in Japan for the EU-Japan Summit

EU President Ursula von der Leyen

On Thursday May 12, 2022, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel will represent the European Union at the EU-Japan Summit in Tokyo. Japan will be represented by its Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida. In this increasingly unpredictable world, the EU seeks to strengthen its relations with like-minded partners. The EU-Japan partnership is increasingly deep and dynamic, underpinned by the Strategic Partnership Agreement and the Economic Partnership Agreement. Japan is the first partner country with which the EU has concluded a Connectivity Partnership, with additional momentum given by the Global Gateway, and a Green Alliance. Moreover, the new EU Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific provides an overarching framework to boost cooperation with Japan in this region. The EU and Japan will discuss challenges in their respective neighbourhoods, including Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and its impact on the global economy, energy and food security and the international rules-based order. Leaders will also discuss the EU and Japan´s leadership in digital technologies, efforts to create diversified, sustainable and reliable supply chains, the fight against climate change, as well as the joint work towards more reliable and beneficial infrastructure projects in the region and abroad under the Global Gateway strategy. Presidents von der Leyen and Michel will participate in a joint press point following the summit, which will be shown live on EbS at ca. 04:15 am CEST.
