Have you heard about the modernisation of Intrastat?

Whether the answer is “Yes” or “No”, it is time for you to find out more about the modernisation of Intrastat now!

Intrastat is a system used to collect data on trade of goods between the EU Member States. Traditionally, international trade in goods statistics (ITGS) were based on data collected by customs authorities on trade transactions between countries. The advent of the Single Market on 1 January 1993, with its removal of customs formalities between EU Member States and subsequent loss of data sources, led to an establishment of a new data collection system called Intrastat.

Since its introduction, Intrastat has been perceived as a particularly burdensome data collection system – and this is exactly what the modernisation of Intrastat is tackling, guided by the overall principle:

Enabling the overall reduction of the response burden on companies, while maintaining a sound level of quality.

The most important innovation of this modernised system is that each National Statistical Authority could use the export data received from the other EU Member States to compile its own import statistics. The exchange of these microdata will start with data concerning the reference month of January 2022.

But how will this work in practice? What are the main features of this modernised system? If you are a user or reporter of intra-EU trade in goods statistics – what do you need to know?
