AATCC Tackles Laundering, Various Exposure Conditions, and Measuring E-Textiles

Since publishing one of the very first electronic textile (e-textile) test methods, AATCC Research Committee RA 111 has been working diligently to update AATCC EP13, as well as publishing a brand-new exposure method for e-textiles.

New and Improved EP13

AATCC EP13, Evaluation Procedure for Electrical Resistance of Electronically Integrated Textiles, was developed a year ago and is designed to be a straight-forward method for instructing users how to use a two-point probe multimeter to assess the resistance of various e-textile samples, which provides a consistent process to measure the resistance of e-textiles. However, users were having difficulties obtaining consistent measurements; one of the biggest reasons being the variable pressure applied by different technicians assessing the sample. To address this issue, AATCC RA111 has been researching new probes and technology. Their research has led them to including a new four-point probe option in AATCC EP13. The four-point probes will allow for consistent pressure during measurement and more accurate resistance readings. This addition is currently being balloted for approval by the committee.

Can E-Textiles Be Washed?

Laundering e-textiles has been one of the biggest concerns since they were conceived, and one of the industry’s biggest requests is a durability to laundering test method for e-textiles. AATCC RA111 has recently published a new method that outlines how to launder e-textile test specimens and gone even further and included other common exposures in a single method.

AATCC TM210, Test Method for Electrical Resistance Before and After Various Exposure Conditions, is a comprehensive guide for preparing e-textile specimens for exposure to laundering, perspiration, UV light, dry cleaning, moisture, sea water, and more in a single method! All instructions for cutting and preparing e-textile specimens for each specific exposure condition have been detailed so technicians can find all the information they need in one place. Once the exposure testing is complete, AATCC EP13 can be used to evaluate your e-textile specimens.
