Wool Industry Commits to Wool Sheep Welfare

From shepherds to shop owners, the Dumfries House Wool Declaration ensures strictest standards of the animal welfare

Marking the eighth anniversary of The Campaign for Wool, the first ever Wool Conference took place at Dumfries House in Scotland on Friday the 9th of September 2016, where His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, Patron of The Campaign for Wool, presided over the signing of the Dumfries House Wool Declaration.

This “Custodians of The Wool Industry” declaration has been created to ensure that key players from shepherds to shop owners commit toWool Certificate of Wool Declaration protect the environment and uphold the best possible practices for sheep welfare, commerce and industry.

Integral to the declaration is the commitment to upholding and enforcing the ‘Five Freedoms of the Sheep,’ the strictest standards of animal welfare as embodied in the International Wool Textile Organisation Specifications for Wool Sheep Welfare.

The declaration is a promise by The Campaign’s Commonwealth funders, namely British Wool Marketing Board, Australian Wool Innovation / The Woolmark Company, Cape Wools South Africa and The Campaign for Wool New Zealand, to commit their time, efforts and talent to promoting the natural benefits and properties of wool.

Said Peter Ackroyd, COO Campaign for Wool and President of IWTO, “In subscribing to the Dumfries House Wool Declaration, the wool industry and its members commit to care about the welfare of the wool sheep and the environment it lives in. This declaration formalizes the standards the complete wool pipeline aspires to.”

A Further Commitment from The Campaign’s Patron

The Prince of Wales launched the Campaign for Wool in January 2010 as an initiative to expand the market for British and Commonwealth wool and to promote awareness of its environmental benefits.Wool 1

It has been successful in increasing wool prices and promoting the unique qualities of wool over other fabrics, particularly oil-based manmade fibres.

Nicholas Coleridge CBE, the Campaign for Wool chairman, said now that the challenge was to encourage lesser users to adopt wool.

His Royal Highness was met with a standing ovation as he committed to a further five years as Patron of The Campaign for Wool stating: “I am going to do everything I possibly can to build on the success we have achieved, thus ensuring that wool receives proper recognition for all its wonderful, natural attributes.”

The conference was the largest and most prestigious international gathering of wool experts ever to be held in the UK, and was organised by The Campaign for Wool and the International Wool Textile Organisation with M&S support.

The conference, attended by around 250 wool trade delegates, many of whom were IWTO members, included speeches by The Prince of Wales, M&S CEO Steve Rowe, the designer Sir Paul Smith, Nicholas Coleridge CBE, the President of Conde Nast International and Livia Firth, the founder and creative director of Eco-Age.

Allan Savory, president and co-founder of The Savory Institute, delivered a presentation on livestock and its impact on its environment.

Olympic medallist Max Whitlock, pictured, performed a routine on a dining table in a Paul Smith wool suit to demonstrate the fibre’s versatility and flexibility.

Logo IWTO SheepIWTO was represented by Secretary General Dalena White, President Peter Ackroyd (also COO of Campaign for Wool), Vice President Piercarlo Zedda, Treasurer Wolf Edmayr and Board Member Klaus Steger.

With a world-wide membership encompassing the wool pipeline from sheep to shop, the International Wool Textile Organisation represented the interests of the global wool trade. By facilitating research and development and maintaining textile industry standards, IWTO ensures a sustainable future for wool.
