2013 figures on European nonwoven production

According to figures collected and compiled by EDAN A , production of nonwovens in Europe grew around 1.9 % in 2013 to reach 2037400 t (1998900 t, +1.5 %). The annual growth rate since 2009 was 5.2 %

EDAMA’s Market Analysis and Economic Affairs Director, Jacques Prigneaux, explained: “Growth in the wetlaid nonwovens has been substantial 2013, but it is actually the hydro entanglement process that has recorded the highest apparent growth of more than 5.7 %. However, other bonding processes within the drylaid technologies (thermally, chemically bonded and needled punched), and also spun melt nonwovens witnessed low growth rates. Airlaid production, compared to its performance of 2012, recorded a higher growth of 3 %.”

The main end use for nonwovens remains the hygiene market with a 32 % share of deliveries, equal to 645700 t, or + 1.9 %. The most significant growth areas for nonwovens ere in medical (+14.0 %), and all types of filtration applications (+11.5 %), followed by all types of wipes (+7.4 %), and thereof the evolution of personal care wipes showed a growth rate of 12.4 %.

On the other hand, major declines were noted in interlinings, coating substrates and artificial leather markets. Additionally, several important durable sectors in terms of volumes sold, such as for construction markets or agriculture, showed limited to somewhat negative growth.

Nevertheless, sales to automotive interiors market continued to increase (+4.1 %). This trend confirms the importance of the automotive sector for the European nonwovens industry. This sector was highlighted during INDEXTM14 (April 8 – 11, 2014) in Geneva, and at a special workshop on April 8, 2014.
