Walt Disney Company to build the world’s largest Disney Store in China
US Walt Disney’s first and the world’s largest Disney Store will be located in Lujiazui in Shanghai, China
The new store is bringing together an innovative and fun retail experience, creating magical moments for guests of all ages. The first Disney Store in Mainland China is scheduled to open early 2015.
The official signing between Mr. Stanley Cheung, Executive Vice President, and Managing Director of The Walt Disney Company, Greater China and Li Jinzhao, General Manager Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone Development Co. Ltd., took place on October 25,2 013. The event took place at the Pudong Government offices in presence of Governor Jiang Liang and Vice Governor, Madam Liu Zhengyi.
Yang Xiao Ming, General Manager of Shanghai Lujiazui (Group) Company Limited stated: “As the overall developer of the Lujiazui Finance District and an investor in Shanghai Disney Resort’s Chinese joint venture partner, The Shanghai Shendi Group, we are very pleased to partner with the Walt Disney Company and have the Disney Store located here in Lujiazui. The addition of the store, the innovative design, and product and entertainment offerings will provide the Lujiazui area with a family friendly destination focus point and will contribute to Shanghai’s reputation and leadership as a family, business, cultural entertainment and tourism destination”.
The to be opened site in early 2015 will cover 5000 m2 and will be located in Shanghai’s financial hub, and feature a state-of-the-art Disney Store retail space (around 1000 m2) and a Disney-themed outdoor plaza area, featuring Disney-themed landscaping, a first for any Disney Store a property in the world, and will have the capacity to host outdoor events providing a destination hub for family entertainment. It will also be an important site where fans can track the progress of Shanghai Disney Resort which is targeted to open at the end of 2015.
The interior of the store will be designed using Disney’s award winning innovative store format. Featuring cutting-edge technologies, families and kids will be able to interact with their favourite characters and stories from across Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. China’s flagship Disney Store will feature the largest and most diverse collection of Disney products by local and international designers. The surrounding area will have foot traffic of over 40 million visitors a year and is a destination for many shoppers, visitors and tourists to Shanghai.
Unbelievable, but true, Disney’s first animation screened in China in the 1930s and today the company continues with offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou with over 2000 employees . The company is focused on creating high quality entertainment experiences and effectively building local and Disney franchises in China. Disney currently has several established businesses in the country, including studio entertainment, parks and resorts, consumer products, media networks, interactive media, and its English language programme launched in 2008. In September 2005 Disney opened its doors to its first theme park in China, Hong Kong Disneyland and in 20221 announced ground breaking for the Shanghai Disneyland Resort. Disney Company had annual revenues of over USD 40.9 billion in its most recent fiscal year, and enjoyed on October 23, 2013 a market capitalisation of USD 121.69 billion.
