Also the denim sector forms an emergent challenge of the cotton value chain

ICAC, the International Cotton Advisory Committee (USA) analysed the emergent challenges facing the cotton value chain also in the denim sector at its meeting in Colombia

According to ICAC the world trade in denim fabric fluctuated 2001 and 2011 between 530000 to 760000 t annually, thus averaged to 670000 t over this period. The largest import market is Hong Kong (95000 t), followed by Turkey (58000 t) and Mexico (53000 t). China is the major exporter of denim with about 273000 t in 2012. The second largest exporter was Pakistan with 70000 t, followed by Turkey (37000 t), India (36000 t) and the U.S.A. (35000 t).

The value of world denim imports fluctuated 2001 to 2011 between USD 3.0 billion and USD 3.9 million. Export and import unit values for denim rose from about USD 4.00/kg in the early 2000s to between USD 7.00 to USD 8/kg in 2011.

These figures will be included in a report to the 72nd Plenary Meeting of the ICAC in Cartagena, Colombia, starting September 2013 with around 400 people attending.
