Japan promises billions for development aid to Africa

At a conference (TICAD Tokyo International Conference on African Development) in Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe promised in front of more than 40 African countries’ representatives that Japan will support Africa’s development with around JPY 140 billion over the next five years

Japan tries to increase its efforts to gain influence in Africa, also as a sort of a counterweight to China. China has achieved a tried volume that is five times higher than the one of Japan and its FDI Foreign Direct Investment tops eight times the one of Japan.

Japan will dedicate these means mostly to enhance Africa’s private sector, but also to assist these countries against terrorism. Thus there will be a co-operation between public institutions and private enterprises. The Japanese business community weights Africa to offer a great potential.

In the first stage, Japan will invest around JPY 3.2 billion in Africa’s public and private sector, and 1000 students will have the opportunity over the next five years to study at Japanese Universities and to gain practical insight into Japanese enterprises.

As can be witnessed from the two tables on Japanese Trade, African countries do not figure on the list of the ten major trade partners of Japan.
