The American President has made appointments to fill two important trade positions
On May 2, President Obama nominated two personalities for important positions in trade
Michael Froman has been designed to become the new U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and Penny Pritzker new Secretary of Commerce.
Froman has served before as Obama’s deputy national security adviser for international economic affairs. He is an experienced negotiator with close access to the President.
Pritzker is a Chicago businesswoman who played significant roles in the President’s election campaigns in 2008 and 2012. Obama had tried to install her as Secretary of Commerce in his first cabinet.
The former USTR Ron Kirk departed in March 2013 and former Commerce Secretary John Bryson left for health reasons already in summer 2012. Deputy USTR Demetrios Marantis has been serving as acting USTR but has recently accepted a job in the private sector and acting Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank will assume the responsibility of chancellor at the University of Wisconsin this summer.
