Donation of fashion collection to London Design Museum

Jill Ritblat, a Design Museum Trustee, has generously donated her collection of over 400 fashion items to the London Design Museum

This is the museum’s first significant fashion acquisition and was presented by Lady Ritblat through the Art Fund, the national fundraising charity that every year helps hundreds of museums and galleries throughout the UK acquire works of art and objects for their collections.

A group of items from the donated collection are shown since January 30, 2013 in the Design Museum’s new permanent collection exhibition, Extraordinary Stories about Ordinary Things. Items from the collection will also be featured in the inaugural display at the new Design Museum, currently being created at the former Commonwealth Institute in Kensington, opening in 2015.

The fashion collection, which will be an important source for study, includes items by many of the world’s leading designers from Chanel, Issey Miyake and Ungaro to Belville Sassoon and Vivienne Westwood covering the period from the 1970s to the 1990s.

The items already are from Issey Miyake, Chanel/Karl Lagerfeld, Victor Eldelstein, Givenchy/Alexander McQueen and Emanuel Ungaro.

The Design Museum presents since December 5, 2012 to March 3, 2013 also The Art and Design of Contemporary Jewellery under the motto “Unexpected Pleasures”.
