The most attractive brands, fashion and design in China

China’s largest fashion and lifestyle publisher Trends Media Group has released its comprehensive new reports on fashion consumption and industry developments based on the annually conducted survey in 20 Chinese cities

The survey unveils the top 10 most attractive brands and designers, ranks cities by expenditures on fashion goods and services.

The survey reports that designer brands have been widely adopted and that expenditures in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities are on the rise, with consumption some categories surpassing Beijing and Shanghai.

Further key findings are that Shanghai surpassed Beijing in 2012, and that Tianjin is the most satisfied city in store services.

43 % of Chinese fashion customers purchase designer brands and French Chanel ranked No 1 in apparel in 15 Chinese cities and cosmetics brands in China.

Chinese “new wealthy class” is low in brand loyalty and more than half are inclined to change brands.


Opportunities for Chinese designers are enhancing. Designer fashion and couture is widely adopted by Chinese luxury consumers. Shanghai outperformed Beijing as top fashion city and Nanjing surpassed Guangzhou and Shenzhen as third fashion city in China. In Tianjin, fashion expenditures grew fastest, ranking No. 3 for consumer goods, over passing Shanghai and Beijing. Nanjing is number two in lifestyle and leisure expenditures, after Shanghai and ahead of Beijing. Shenyang’s middle-class is to spend 88 % of total income on fashion, middle-class and wealthy of Qingdao spent CNY 7300 on social activities, whereas in Chengdu they spent CNY 4600 on sports and outdoor activities and in Shenzhen CNY 5500 on leisure and entertainment. In Nanjing they spent CNY 12000 on apparel and in Shanghai CNY 8000 on accessories, CNY 10000 on jewellery, CNY 8700 on watches and CNY 8000 on cosmetics.

For watches Rolex ranked No. 1 watch brand in 16 cities and Chow Tai Fook ranked as number one in 10 cities, whereas BMW ranked No. 1 car brand in 13 cities. Beijing ranks highest in number of luxury stores and fashion activities in the 20 Chinese cities surveyed.
