20 years Tencel from Austrian Lenzing

The first large production facility for lyocell fibres (now marketed exclusively under the name of TENCEL® by Austrian Lenzing) started 1992 in Mobile, Alabama (USA). Today Lenzing Group manufactures TENCEL® fibres at three plants located in Austria (Heiligenkreuz, capacity 60000 t , Great Britain (Grimsby, 40000 t) and the U.S.A. (Mobile, Ala. 50000). The commemorative ceremony was held together with a customer symposium

The first factory in Mobile has been originally bui8lt by British Courtaulds, a former competitor. Lenzing took over this facility at the occasion of the acquisition of the Tencel Group in 2004. The site has been technologically enhanced until the today’s production capacity of around 50000 t annually has been reached.

Lenzing CEO Peter Untersperger stated: “TENCEL® has been the largest technological step forward in the man-made cellulose fibre industry, since the invention of viscose fibres about 100 years ago. The development of the fibre over the last 20 years only marks the beginning of a success story which will continue for many decades to come. TENCEL® ideally combines the need for competitive production costs, as compared to other fibres, with the requirement of ensuring sustainable, enviro0nmentally compatible production. TENCEL® is a breakthrough technology, and Lenzing Group is by far the world’s number one provider of TENCEL® fibres”.
