Swiss Clariant with higher sales but lower profit

Sales of internationally operating specialist chemical manufacturer Clariant reports higher sales for the third quarter and the first nine months of 2012 but with lesser profit and operational margin

Sales amounted in the third quarter to CHF 1923 million (CHF 1865 million) or an increase in CHF but 3 % less in local currencies. In the first nine months of the ongoing year sales amounted to CHF 5846 million (CHF 5452) reflecting an increase in both CHF and local currencies of 7 %. EBITDA and margin are decreasing for both periods, the margin in the third quarter as compared to 2011 dropped from 11.6 % to 10.5 % and for the nine months from 13.5 % to 11.5 % and net income dropped in the third quarter from CHF 81 million to CHF 49 million and for the nine months from CHF 241 million to CHF 139 million. On the other hand operating cash flow increased in the third quarter from CHF 127 million to CHF 181 million and for the nine month from CHF 114 million to CHF 184 million.

Particularly weakness was noted in the electronics, coating and increasingly in the automotive industries severely affecting the Additives and Pigments Business Units. On the other hand Leather Services, Textile Chemicals and Paper Specialities recovered from the low previous-year’s levels and posted robust single-digit sales growth in local currencies. At group level, volumes decreased 5% on annual basis and those reductions affected most businesses but Catalysis & Energy, Functional Materials, Industrial & Consumer Specialities and Masterbatches were withstanding and are on track to achieve their full year targets.

The company does not expect that the last quarter will offer drastic changes.
