In agreement with Extell Development Company Nordstrom has announced on June 28, 2012 to build its new flagship store along Manhattan’s bustling 57th Street Corridor at 225 West 57th Street – between Broadway and Seventh Avenue, near the Columbus Circle and on a surface of 285000 square feet to open in 2018. New York’s Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg stated at the announcement conference “This is very exciting news for New Yorkers and the millions of tourists who come to our city to shop each year and this new addition to the West Side of Manhattan is another sign of the private sector’s confidence in New York City”.
It will be a seven-story department store and comprise the base of a distinctive mixed use: retail, hotel and high-rise residential tower all still in the planning stages by Extell. The 40000 square feet block site, once housing the original Hard Rock Café and it was assembled by Extell President Gary Barnett over a period of nearly a decade. The first excavation work is to begin as early as the first quarter of 2013. Also Nordstrom was seeking a New York location for many years and is happy to be part of this terrific development project with Extell, declared Erik Nordstrom, president of stores for Nordstrom Inc. Derek Truslon, international director with Jones Lang LaSalle, who represented Nordstrom in the transaction, commented; “New York has not seen a new fashion specialty store of Nordstrom’s quality and importance in decades”.
