EU textiles and clothing key figures for 2011
We present the latest figures of EU textiles and clothing in 2011
Total turnover of the EU 27 in the relevant textile sectors increased by 4.0 % to EUR 178.9 billion, thereof textiles contributed EUR 87.5 or 5.0 % more than in 2010, clothing added 2.7 % to EUR 81.5 billion and man-made fibres (without polyolefin) EUR 10.1 billion or a plus of 6.4 %. The employees’ per capita turnover amounted to EUR 97528 (+ 6.4 %) and investment in percent of turnover amounted to 2.9 %, exports to 21.7 % and the number of employees per company averaged to 13.
Total Investment in the three sectors amounted to EUR 5.3 billion or 6.5 % more than in 2010 thereof EUR 3.0 billion (+5.9 %) went into textiles, EUR 2.0 billion (+7.5 %) into Clothing and 0.3 billion (+6.4 %) in man-made fibres.
Total employment in the three sectors fell by 2.3 % to 1834000 thereof 1115000 (-1.9 %) were employed in clothing, 696000 (-2.9 %) in textiles and 23000 (-1.0 %) in man-made fibres.
In total there were 145978 textile relevant companies registered (-2.2%) thereof 102311 (-1.9 %) clothing companies, 43583 (-2.9 %) textile companies and 83 (-1.2 %) were engaged in man-made fibres.
Total Extra EU 27 exports amounted to EUR 38.7 billion (+13.3 %) thereof EUR 20.3 billion (+ 8.3 %) were textiles and EUR 18.4 billion (+19.4 %) clothing.
Total Extra EU 27 imports amounted to EUR 93.1 billion (+9.8 %) thereof EUR 67.7 billion (+8.3 %) was attributable to clothing and EUR 25.4 billion (+13.9 %) were textiles.
The trade balance remains in total negative and amounted to totally EUR-54.4 billion (+7.4 %) thereof clothing contributed EUR -49.3 billion (+ 4.7 %) and textiles EUR – 5.1 billion (+43.7 %).
Euratex, the umbrella organisation of the European clothing and textile industries estimates that the European (Western Europe + CEEC and Turkey) mill consumption of fibres amounted 2011 to 4702000 t and that the household consumption of textiles and clothing in EU 27 reached EUR 470.5 billion.
The umbrella organisation estimates that in the first quarter of 2012 Extra-EU textile relevant exports were growing in value by +8.1 % and by volume 6.8 %. On the other hand such imports have decreased by 10.1 % in volume and 5.8 % in value. European companies have managed to increase their exports against the same quarter of 2011 in all major export markets such as USA, Russia, Turkey, China and Japan.
