Research for the safety of nano-materials
The German Environment Ministry, the federal Institute for Occupational Security and Health and chemical giant BASF are teaming up to do research work on long term effects of nano-particles
The long term studies over four years and according to the OECD guidelines with a budget of EUR 5 million will focus on investigating chronic effects of nano-particles (also in low exposure) in the lung (inhalation tests executed by BASF). All involved parties declare that no comparable long-term studies of this scope have yet been performed to0 determine the impact of nano-materials and Germany sees itself at the forefront of global leadership in safety research in this respect.
Motivated scientists and representatives of the government will enhance the safety of nano-materials with new findings
An external advisory committee of high ranking, internationally recognised scientists will be providing the scientific support and the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Federal Institute for Ris Assessment will coordinate and evaluate the study but the toal coordination remains with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
