US National Winners of Fashion Competition 2012

The National Winners of the Art Institutes Passion for Fashion Competition 2012 bestowed the grand prize winners of the 2012 Passion for Fashion Scholarship Competition sponsored by the Art Institutes and providing the opportunity for fashion-savvy teens throughout the USA, Canada and Puerto Rico to compete for the chance to earn up to half-tuition scholarship to study Fashion Design or Fashion Marketing and Merchandising and Fashion Retail Management

The winners are Mary Lum of Cornelius, Oregon and Jessica Lazarus of Boca Raton, Florida. Lum created a “Vintage to Runway” evening gown of the Victorian Era. Her dress has 19th century underpinnings that convert into an innovative urban eveningwear garment made out of an exceptionally lightweight microfiber taffeta. She was awarded the half-tuition scholarship to study at the Art Institute of Portland.

Lazarus’ submitted “TimeLine” as a business concept for vintage fashion merchandising and offered a visionary way to shop for vintage and vintage-inspired looks. The items were chosen from thrift shops around the world to satisfy her customers’ unique styles. She won the the grand prize in the Fashion Marketing & Merchandising and Fashion Retail Management category and earns half-tuition scholarship to study at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

In addition the grand prize winners receive a VIP trip to New York City including a “meet and greet” at the Seventeen magazine offices, lunch with a Seventeen Style Pro, a USD 500 shopping spree at DKNY with a Seventeen Style Pro, and a USD 500 gift card to shop in New York City. Second prize winners earn USD 5000 tuition scholarship and the winners are Elysia Wadley, The Art Institute of Colorado, in the Fashion Design category and Acalia Jones in the other category and representing The Art Institute of Virginia Beach, a branch of the Art Institute of Atlanta. Third place winners with USD 4000 tuition scholarship are Mollie Trudeau, The Art Institute of Tucson in Fashion Design and Cassie Hankins, The Art Institute of California, Orange County.

The Art Institutes consist of more than 45 educational institutions in North America providing an important source for design, media arts, fashion and culinary arts professionals.
