India looses the cotton knot
The sudden and total ban on cotton exports by the Indian government was not received well in India and around the cotton world
Now the government has lifted on Monday the export embargo but no new registration certificates (RC) necessary for exports will be issued for the time being. At least this partial lift allows exporters to fulfil registered cotton export contracts and this was the critic main argument. This will help Indian cotton farmers too. However there is a severance implied: The already issued RC’s will have to undergo further inspection and revalidation before the cotton will be exported. It is a measure that the Indian Government becomes more knowledgeable of the cotton situation in order to protect the needs of its own textile industry.
