The 2011 global patent filing figures

WIPO the World Intellectual Property Organisation (CH) reports a new record level for 2011 patent filings and the foremost growth since 2005. China, Japan and the USA lead the pack with a share of 82 % of the growth of 10.7 % and total WIPO applications reached 181900 and the organisation reported during 2011 also the two millionth patent filing in its history.

The top 15 patent filing countries can be had from table 1.

Of those 15 countries only six (NL, I, E, AUS, SF and UK) filed 2011 less applications than in 2010. The largest user remains the USA with 48596 filings however with a decline of 0.7 % of its total share and also Germany lost 0.5 % of its total share whereas Japan with 38888 filings increased its share be 1.8 % as well as China’s share with 16506 filings increased by 1.5 % and the top single applicant company was Chinese ZTE Corporation with 2826 published applications overtaking Panasonic Corporation (J) with 2463 filings, Huawei Technologies of China rank third with 1831 filings, followed by Sharp Kabushiki Kaisha (J) with 1755 filings and Robert Bosch Corporation (D) with 1518 filings all of the five showed growth rates in  double digits. All in all five Japanese companies (Panasonic, Sharp, Toyota, NEC and Mitsubishi) are to be found of the top 15 list.

The highest number of application derived 2011 from digital communications, delivering 11574 applications or a total share of 7.1 %. Then follows electronic machinery with 6.9 % share, medical technology with 6.6 % share and computer technology had a share of 6.4 %.
