Closer fibre cooperation and exploitation

Austrian Lenzing AG (cellulose fibres) and German smartfiber AG will expand and intensify their already existing cooperation

The closer future cooperation will allow Lenzing at its site in upper Austria to produce exclusively the lyocell specialty fibres smartcelTM and SeaCell® developed by smartfiber. The pilot plant of smartfiber will be relocated from German Rudolstadt to Lenzing (A) in order to enhance the commercial exploitation of the two specialty fibres and produce more economically. The increasing volume of production exceeds already the capacity of the pilot plant whereas Lenzing has the world’s largest cellulose fibre production site in place. Smartfiber will however be responsible for the sales and marketing of its two specialty fibres. They are predominantly used in home textiles, fashion and medical textiles. SeaCell® fibres contain active substances from seaweed having health and nurturing skin effects and offering protection against free radicals and smartcelTM represents the first antibacterial, natural fibre with added zinc as a trace agent and therefore it is destined for regenerative skin care and hygiene in textiles. It is further intended to use Lenzing’s competence in production and processing of lycell fibres (Tencel®) and to combine it with the innovative patented technology of function-oriented fibre products from smartfiber.

In 2007 smartfiber became a licensee of Lenzing for the pilot production of new types of lyocell specialty fibres and the two partners developed also fabrics and collaborated on various research projects.
