A case of slavery like working conditions sanctioned
Because some suppliers had slavery like working conditions in its clothing firms Spanish Zara (Inditex) was accused by the Brazil procurator
Zara was accused to have not faced its liabilities of controlling working conditions before placing orders or supposedly was tolerating unacceptable slavery like working conditions at the sites of some local clothing manufacturers. Inditex was confronted in August with a claim to pay a penalty of EUR 8.2 million. Finally there was an out of court agreement reached covering a fine of around 1.4 million for Inditex and with the compulsory order to have tight control over its sub-suppliers. Only the claim to hold Inditex also responsible for future similar working conditions was dropped.
