February Euro Area international trade in goods surplus EUR 17.9 billion, but EUR 2.7 billion deficit for EU28

Euro Area

The first estimate for Euro Area (EA19) exports of goods to the rest of the world in February 2019 was EUR 183.3 billion, an increase of 4.4 % compared with February 2018 (EUR 175.6 billion). Imports from the rest of the world stood at EUR 165.4 billion, a rise of 4.0 % compared with February 2018 (EUR 159.0 billion). As a result, the euro area recorded a EUR 17.9 billion surplus in trade in goods with the rest of the world in February 2019, compared with + EUR 16.5 billion in February 2018. Intra-euro area trade rose to EUR 160.3 billion in February 2019, up by 3.4% compared with February 2018.

In January to February 2019, euro area exports of goods to the rest of the world rose to EUR 366.8 billion (an increase of 3.4 % compared with January-February 2018), and imports rose to EUR 347.0 billion (an increase of 3.6 % compared with January-February 2018). As a result the euro area recorded a surplus of EUR 19.8 billion, compared with +EUR 19.6 billion in January-February 2018. Intra-euro area trade rose to EUR 326.8 billion in January-February 2019, up by 3.5 % compared with January-February 2018.

European Union

The first estimate for extra-EU28 exports of goods in February 2019 was EUR 156.3 billion, up by 6.2 % compared with February 2018 (EUR 147.2 billion). Imports from the rest of the world stood at EUR 159.0 billion, up by 8.5 % compared with February 2018 (EUR 146.6 billion). As a result, the EU28 recorded a EUR 2.7 billion deficit in trade in goods with the rest of the world in February 2019, compared with a surplus of EUR 0.7 billion in February 2018. Intra-EU28 trade rose to EUR 290.6 billion in February 2019, +3.7 % compared with February 2018.

In January to February 2019, extra-EU28 exports of goods rose to EUR 309.8 billion (an increase of 4.1 % compared with January-February 2018), and imports rose to EUR 338.2 billion (an increase of 6.2 % compared with January-February 2018). As a result, the EU28 recorded a deficit of EUR 28.4 billion, compared with -EUR 20.7 billion in January-February 2018. Intra-EU28 trade rose to EUR 591.8 billion in January-February 2019, +3.6 % compared with January-February 2018.

Annex

In February 2019 compared with January 2019, euro area seasonally adjusted exports decreased by 1.4 %, while imports decreased by 2.7 %. The seasonally adjusted balance was +EUR 19.5 billion, an increase compared with January (+EUR 17.4 billion).

In February 2019 compared with January 2019, EU28 seasonally adjusted exports decreased by 0.2 %, while imports decreased by 2.3 %. The seasonally adjusted balance was -EUR 2.8 billion, an improvement compared with January (-EUR 6.5 billion).
