ECAP partner, the Danish Fashion Institute (DAFI) launches its brand new platform to help clothing designers and product developers create a longer-lasting, more sustainable clothing industry.
What we design and create is crucial. Fashion influences us all – it shapes our identity. And these days, it also shapes our world. In fact, scientists argue this is the dawn of an Anthropocene epoch where humans have become a creative force, responsible for changing the geography, climate and habitat of every living being.
We see endless exciting possibilities in this, and together we can use our skills to create amazing futures. But in the process, we need to carefully consider how we utilize the resources of this planet, because they are not endless. The waste problem is massive for fashion, and this just cannot go on much longer.
As designers and product developers, we have the power to change things for the better. The decisions we make in the design phase mean all the difference in terms of style. But they also determine so much more – like the environmental impact of production, how long clothes will remain wearable, and whether they may be reused or recycled.
Business as usual is not an option. We must recognize that our role is changing and support new mindsets and design practices, working towards design for longevity and circularity. We need to re-think the way clothes are made, used and disposed of, and see all the new opportunities this offers.
We must radically change the fashion industry and design a better future for all.
The current fashion system has many flaws. One of them is the sheer speed of resources going to waste. The market is crowded with short-lived fashion products, where price point is the most dominating factor. Yet price does not equal true cost in a larger sense.
When we design for longevity and circular strategies, we focus on prolonging the useful life of products and resources. This results in fewer products and less resources wasted. And contrary to what you might think, this makes good business sense.
There is no easy fix, but this platform will provide a catalogue of ideas that can help you reach full potential to ensure a future proof business and design process. We seek to break complex issues down into tasty, bite-size parts, and once you have tried them, we think you will be craving more.
Make no mistake, we know designers are not in a position to always do whatever they like. We often work with narrow design briefs, having to balance creativity and conformity. But we need to know what is possible to change within the frameworks we are given, and with the right knowledge and tools, we can better argue and challenge those frames to find better solutions.

When this platform is fully launched, it will function as a dynamic toolbox for designers and product development teams across all garment categories. We provide you with knowledge about best practices, inspiring case stories and access to helpful tools in a combination of articles, videos, interactive graphics and other engaging formats.
We compile the information you need about good initiatives taking place around the world and present it to you as inspiration.
We will be ready to go live with the full launch in September 2017. However, you can sign up now to be kept notified when and how this will happen. When you start using the platform, you will create your own unique user profile with the ability to tailor content for specific needs and interests. You will also have the option to comment and share content, while suggesting your own ideas for more great content, when the platform is live.
