Alternative to fluorocarbon chemistry: protein-based water and dirt-repellent textile-finishing

Hydrophobic properties are very important for numerous textile finishes. In particular, outdoor products and surgical textiles, but also to protect the fibres from microbial decomposition. In a collaborative project between Hohenstein and the Fraunhofer Institute, the goal was to develop a protein-based water and dirt-repellent functionalisation for textiles as a possible alternative to fluorocarbon chemistry. The project goal was achieved using natural proteins as a base for an innovative, cost-efficient, sustainable textile finish with water and dirt repellent properties, which is also harmless to health.
