Third quarter 2018 – Swiss Foreign trade declines for the first time since seven quarters

Swiss Textiles, clothing and footwear offer a mixed bag

Swiss foreign trade after one and a half year continuous growth decreasing exports in the third quarter 2018 against the record pre-quarter sinking by 2.9 %. However, exports settled above CHF  54 billion level. Imports sank on a high level by 1.5 % corresponding with around CHF 768 million.  The balance of trade shows a surplus of 3.5 billion.

Seasonal adjusted figures for Textiles, Clothing and Footwear exports are as follows: First quarter CHF 1187 million, nominal + 3.7 %, second quarter CHF 1239 million, nominal +4.4 %, third quarter CHF 1224 million or CHF – 15 million or nominal -1.2 %. These sectors exported in July CHF 414 million (-0.5 %), in August CHF 415 million (+0.4 %) and in September CHF 397 million (-18 million or -4.3 %).

The imports of these above sectors were: first quarter CHF 2864 million (+2.1 %), second quarter CHF 2945 million +2.8 %) und third quarter CHF 2280 million or CHF 65 million (-2.2 %) less. The figures for July CHF 956 million (-3.8 %), August CHF 940 million (-1.7 %)  and September 938 million or two million CHF less (-0.2 %).

Clothing imports reached in July CHF 181 million (-3.0 %), in August CHF 178 million (-1.9 %) and September CHF 180 million (+0.9 %)

The Footwear imports were in July CHF 905 million (-0.2 %), August CHF 898 million (-0.8 %) and September CHF 877 million or – CHF 21 million or -2.3 %.
