Asos bans silk, mohair & cashmere products

Asos is set to stop stocking goods made from silk, mohair and cashmere as it introduces major updates to its animal welfare policy.

The online fashion retailer has banned suppliers from using any part of endangered, exotic, vulnerable or wild caught species for any of its products.

“Asos firmly believes it is not acceptable for animals to suffer in the name of fashion or cosmetics,” its new policy states.

Although Asos will still sell leather and lambswool products, it has also updated its policy to ensure all the materials used are the by-product of the meat industry.

No animals should be slaughtered specifically to produce products sold through any of Asos’ websites,” it added.

“All animal materials used must be by-products of the meat industry… Asos is committed to working with industry expert groups to support the ongoing research, development and implementation of animal welfare standards and transparency in the leather supply chain.

“Asos is a member of the Leather Working Group and is working towards sourcing all skins from LWG rated tanneries, to ensure good environmental compliance and traceability.”

The retailer stated it would sell through its existing commitment by January 2019, and the move has been welcomed by animal rights group PETA.

PETA’s director Elisa Allen told Fashion United: “PETA applauds Asos for its decision to stop selling cruelly obtained mohair as well as silk, down, feathers, and cashmere.”
