Uzbekistan – Investment in the textile and clothing industry

Uzbekistan is investing in the modernisation of its economy. Investments of more than EUR 1.7 billion are planned in the textile and clothing industry. Sectoral and regional development programmes cover both the objectives and specific activities of the modernisation and increasing capacity. International donors and foreign commercial banks are financing many projects.

The programme for the textile and clothing industry from 2017-2020 lists around 130 projects with a total value of EUR 1.7 billion. About half of the planned investments should come from foreign commitments. The aim is to double the annual out- put of finished textile products during the said period. With an annual volume of more than 3 million tonnes of raw cotton (not ginned), Uzbekistan is one of the world‘s largest producers of the white gold. A second industry programme envisages the implementation of five projects for the production of raw silk, silk wad- ding and fabrics, as well as finished silk products from 2018 to 2021. The necessary investments are estimated to be least EUR 22 million.
