Switzerland dedicated CHF 24.6 billion to R&D in 2021. This represents an average annual increase of 4 % compared with 2019, the year of the last survey. These activities were mainly carried out within higher education institutions (28 %) and private enterprises (68 %) by almost 140000 persons. In international comparison, Switzerland remains one of the most research-intensive economies. These are the main results of the Federal Statistical Office’s (FSO) statistics on “research and development in Switzerland”.
