There are eight key investment areas for advancing Black economic mobility, according to analysis by senior partner Shelley Stewart and coauthors. These areas include financial inclusion, bridging the digital divide, and health equity. Investing in impact funds, which aim to support measurable benefits across environmental, social, and governance factors, is one way to promote progress across these key categories—and generate favorable returns for investors.

Corralling carbon

Carbon capture, use, and storage (CCUS) could play a significant role in the effort to reach climate goals. The Asia–Pacific region, home to more than 1,300 emitter companies, could represent as much as 55 percent of global CCUS uptake by 2050, find partner Ed Lock and coauthors. Doing so, however, will require the region to boost its current CCUS projects by 450 times.

Health meets wealth

Investments in healthcare could add trillions of dollars to global GDP—all while improving quality of life, find McKinsey global managing partner Bob Sternfels, World Economic Forum president Børge Brende, and contributors. Investment areas that could bolster healthcare systems and reduce the global disease burden include improving environmental sustainability, encouraging healthier behaviors, and improving access to vaccines and preventative treatments.

5G buildup

Telecommunications companies are expected to invest more than $600 billion in 5G infrastructure between 2022–25. But more than keeping gamers happy with faster speeds, telcos can look to position themselves as 5G business builders by focusing on three key areas: core connectivity, premium connectivity, and platforms and solutions.

How renewables can materialise
