In this session, the co-authors of the WIPO-commissioned study on “The Role of the Domain Name System and its Operators in Online Copyright Enforcement” will examine the various operators of the domain name system (DNS) and the responsibility of such operators and service providers with respect to online copyright enforcement. We will look at the several regulatory regimes applicable to DNS service providers, as well as how different national laws have addressed online copyright infringement by requiring DNS providers to suspend domain names. The session will also explore actions DNS providers can undertake to discourage online copyright infringement.
